**Brooding and Management of Goslings**
1. **Preparation of the Brooding Area**
(1) **Cleaning and Disinfection**: The brooding room should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected using a 0.5% Tetris spray solution. This process should be completed 3 to 4 days before the goslings arrive to ensure a safe and hygienic environment.
(2) **Setting Up Equipment**: After cleaning, place clean and disinfected feeders and water troughs in each compartment, with one feeder and one water bucket per 20–25 goslings. Water and feed should be added simultaneously to encourage early feeding.
(3) **Litter Preparation**: Lay down dry straw or wood shavings the day before the goslings arrive. Turn on the heat lamps and heating system to maintain an indoor temperature of 28–30°C, ensuring a warm and comfortable environment for the young goslings.
2. **Introducing the Goslings**
(1) During transportation, it's essential to maintain proper insulation and ventilation. Upon arrival, quickly move the goslings into the brooding area.
(2) Before entering the brooding room, allow each gosling to dip its feet in a 0.05% potassium permanganate solution and drink a water solution containing antibiotics—known as "tidal mouth." This practice significantly improves survival rates. Additionally, all goslings should receive an anti-serum injection within 24 hours of hatching.
(3) Place 20–25 goslings per square meter in the brooding area to avoid overcrowding and ensure adequate space for movement and feeding.
3. **Feeding and Management from Day 1 to Day 7**
(1) Since there is no specialized gosling feed available, chicken pellets can be used as a suitable alternative. Add a small amount of multivitamins and antibiotics to the drinking water to strengthen their immunity. Avoid overwatering initially, as the high temperature in the brooding room may reduce their appetite. Overfeeding can lead to spoiled feed, so start with small quantities.
(2) On the first day, help establish a feeding routine by guiding the goslings to the feeders and water sources. Weak individuals may need manual assistance to locate the food and water.
(3) Goslings have poor thermoregulation abilities. If they feel cold, they tend to huddle together, which can lead to suffocation or death. Regularly break up these groups every 2 hours to maintain even warmth.
(4) Maintain a temperature of 28–30°C during the first three days, gradually reducing it to 25–28°C in the next four days.
(5) Keep the litter dry at all times. Replace any damp bedding immediately to prevent health issues such as colds or hypothermia.
(6) Protect the goslings from predators like rats, cats, and snakes by securing the brooding area and implementing regular checks.
4. **Feeding and Management from Day 4 to Day 8**
(1) Goslings are herbivores, so their diet should primarily consist of forage. From day 8 onward, introduce small amounts of fresh vegetables or grass to supplement their nutrition, which helps reduce feeding costs and prepares them for future dietary changes.
(2) On sunny days, allow the goslings to graze freely in a safe outdoor area. This helps improve their overall health and adaptability. Avoid letting them out on rainy days.
(3) At 7–15 days old, administer vaccinations against avian influenza and paramyxovirus to protect against common diseases.
(4) By day 15, maintain an indoor temperature of 20–25°C and ensure proper ventilation. Open windows for 2–3 hours during sunny midday periods to improve air quality.
(5) As the goslings grow, increase their time spent outdoors and adjust their feed accordingly—reducing fine materials while increasing roughage. Ensure sufficient water supply and regularly clean the living area to maintain hygiene.
(6) Monitor daily for signs of illness, such as white lice. Isolate affected goslings and add enrofloxacin or ofloxacin to the drinking water to prevent the spread of disease.
