Goat's summer grazing management

In the middle of May, as ewes finish lambing, it's an ideal time to administer a new type of anthelmintic called Afordin (also known as Worm Buster). This treatment effectively removes internal nematodes, external parasites, lice, grasshoppers, and fly larvae. The recommended dosage is one 5g sachet per 50kg of body weight, mixed into the feed. Repeat the treatment every 7 to 10 days, and avoid using medicated baths once the pests have been eliminated. Lambs born in spring can be dewormed in the fall, but always ensure proper dosing. In areas where schistosomiasis is prevalent, drugs like nitroprusside can be used during spring and autumn to control insect populations. During summer, managing grazing is crucial. Sheep tend to gather in hot weather and may not eat enough. Implement a grazing schedule: early morning grazing, return at midday for rest, and late evening grazing. Adjust grazing times based on dew levels—more dew means later grazing. Dewy grass can increase the risk of parasitic infections and bloat. It’s best to graze in well-drained areas. Around 10 am, wait until the heat subsides before allowing sheep to graze. Pastures should be accessed around 2:30 pm, and collected by 7 pm. From 11 pm to 2:30 pm, allow rest. In the morning, place sheep on sunny slopes with lower-quality grass, and switch to better pastures in the afternoon. On hot days, choose shaded or well-ventilated areas to avoid overheating. During rainy days, graze on flat ground, ensuring sheep get 4 to 5 full meals a day. In the early morning and late evening, select tender pastures and use a "starry" grazing method, repeatedly moving the flock to encourage multiple feeding sessions. Provide salt and clean, flowing water daily—1 to 6 times a day. Avoid stagnant or dirty water to prevent disease. Keep sheep from lying in damp areas to avoid rheumatism, and protect them from rain during grazing. After the summer solstice, continue grazing in light rain but avoid heavy downpours. Post-rain, move sheep to hillside areas and use the "starry" grazing method to help dry their wool and prevent illness. Avoid steep slopes during thunderstorms to prevent accidents caused by fear. Drying sheep in the summer heat is essential for their health. Move them to a shaded area outside the pen to cool down and reduce stress. Rushing them into the barn immediately after grazing can cause overheating and digestive issues. Avoid bringing them into the enclosure at noon. Let them rest in the shade. At night, after grazing, rush the flock to the yard and wait until midnight to bring them inside, allowing them to stay overnight in the open. Before morning grazing, let sheep dry out for 1 to 2 hours. Starting in early summer, set up sheep pens with wooden boards for lambs, fill the area with dry soil, and keep it clean and ventilated. Many modern farms now use two-story structures that provide natural cooling, making it easier to manage the flock. If you notice sheep showing signs of weakness, loss of appetite, or other symptoms, they may be suffering from heat stress. Ensure they are dried overnight and treat any sick animals promptly.
