Kale, also known as leaf peony, is a biennial herb that's easy to grow and fast to mature. It's a colorful foliage plant often used in parks, streets, and flower beds, where it's pruned into various beautiful patterns. Its vibrant colors make it stand out, and it has a long ornamental period from November until March of the following year. Kale comes in a variety of colors, including light red, purple, white, and yellow, making it an ideal choice for potted plants.
Kale is hardy and thrives in sunny, well-drained soil. It can be grown both in open fields and in pots, preferably in sandy loam. Sowing typically takes place between mid-July and late August. The seedbed should have fine soil particles, and the ground must be level. Before planting, the area should be evenly prepared and watered. After sowing the seeds, cover them with sifted soil and place a layer of grass or shade net on top to keep the soil moist until germination occurs. Once 50% of the seedlings emerge, remove the cover in the evening. When the leaves appear, transplant the seedlings in groups of 3-4, spacing them about 20 cm apart. Apply base fertilizer (compound or organic) to the seedbeds.
After the seedlings develop 7-8 leaves, they can be transplanted into their final location. For garden beds, space them 40-45 cm apart. If growing in pots, you can plant directly in containers. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain moisture by watering every 7-8 days. Transplanting to flower beds or pots is usually done in mid to late October. When grown in pots, kale requires daily watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. This makes it a versatile and attractive option for both outdoor and indoor gardening.
