I. Planting Period
In northern China, the optimal time to plant cherry trees in protected real estate areas is after the soil thaws in spring but before the buds begin to sprout. Most plantings occur between mid to late April and early May. This timing has been proven to result in a high survival rate due to favorable temperature and moisture conditions that support root establishment.
II. Planting Methods
1. Seedling Selection and Treatment
Before planting, it's essential to choose healthy seedlings with strong buds, well-developed root systems, and no signs of pests or diseases. Once selected, the roots should be soaked in water for about 24 hours to rehydrate them. After soaking, the roots can be dipped in a 3-5 degree solution of lime sulfur or a biological pesticide to protect against potential pathogens and improve root health.
2. Planting Techniques
Prior to planting, mark the planting spots according to the designated spacing and layout. Dig a hole centered around each marked spot. The depth of the hole should be adjusted so that the original ground level on the seedling aligns with the surrounding soil. Once the depth is set, place the seedling in the hole, ensuring that the root collar (the area where the roots meet the trunk) is at ground level.
Position the seedling so that the graft union faces north to avoid sunscald. Spread the roots evenly around the hole and ensure they are not twisted or compacted. Straighten the seedling so that it stands upright, aligned with both horizontal and vertical lines. Then, backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots.
After filling, water the seedling thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Once the water has been absorbed, create a small mound of soil around the base of the tree, approximately 30 cm high, to help retain moisture and prevent wind damage. It's important to note that cherries are sensitive to earthworms, and newly developing roots require well-aerated soil. Therefore, in spring planting, it's advisable to avoid using plastic mulch over the planting area, as it can trap heat and reduce oxygen levels, potentially leading to root rot or seedling death.
