I. Planting Period
In northern China, the cherry protection real estate area is typically planted after the soil thaws in spring and before the buds start to sprout. Most plantings occur between mid to late April, with some starting as early as April. Based on practical experience, planting cherries during this time window significantly increases the survival rate of the seedlings. This period allows the roots to establish themselves before the growing season begins, giving the trees a strong start.II. Planting Methods
1. Seedling Selection and Treatment
Before planting, it's essential to choose healthy seedlings that have full buds, well-developed root systems, and are free from pests and diseases. Once selected, the roots should be soaked in water for 24 hours to rehydrate them. Afterward, they can be dipped in a solution of 3-5 degree Baume lime sulfur or a biological pesticide to protect against potential pathogens and improve root health.2. Planting Techniques
Prior to planting, the planting spots should be marked according to the planned spacing and alignment. A hole should be dug around each spot, centered and deep enough to accommodate the root system. The planting depth should be determined by the level of the ground mark on the seedling—usually, the top of the rootstock should be at ground level. Once the depth is set, the seedling is placed in the hole, ensuring the root system is spread out evenly and not compacted. The seedling should be positioned so that the graft union faces north, which helps prevent sunscald. It’s important to keep the tree straight, aligning it with the surrounding plants to create a neat and uniform layout. After filling the hole with soil, gently press the soil around the base to eliminate air pockets. Then, perform a flood irrigation to ensure the soil settles properly. Finally, build a small mound about 30 cm high around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and protect the young plant from wind damage. It’s also important to note that cherries are sensitive to earthworms, and their new roots require well-aerated soil. Therefore, in spring, it’s advisable to avoid using plastic film to cover the planting area, as this can reduce oxygen levels and lead to root rot. By following these planting techniques, you can significantly increase the chances of successful cherry cultivation and long-term tree health.
