A 1-meter-wide platform made of loose, nutrient-rich sandy soil should be built around the pool to help with moisture retention and hole formation. The platform should be slightly above the water level—around 10-20 cm—to ensure proper water flow. Vegetation and algae should be present in the pool to support the ecosystem. To prevent escape, the top of the pool should be sloped, and a thick white nylon net with larger holes can be used. Metal or bamboo supports are installed to hold the net in place, and a thin wire is stretched along the edge of the pool. The anti-escape string should hang down 25 cm, with 20 cm fixed under the bracket and 5 cm free to sag. This setup effectively prevents mink from escaping and is a key technique in successful breeding. Selecting the right stock is crucial. It’s best to purchase seedlings from specialized farms or capture wild specimens that have been domesticated. Capturing wild mink can be done in the early morning or late evening using nets or by placing traps like tiles or bamboo drums. Choose healthy, active individuals weighing between 20-30 grams each. A density of 450 kg per hectare is generally recommended, and any weak or sick individuals should be removed before breeding. Feeding is another critical aspect. Mink primarily consume snails and river clams. Initially, feed them 2-3 times their body weight in snails, and adjust the amount based on the shell-to-body ratio. Snail breeding cycles often align with mink growth periods, so it’s important not to overfeed to avoid competition. Dead snails must be removed promptly to maintain water quality. Water quality management is essential. While mink can tolerate some variation, the ideal temperature range is 20-30°C. Below 10°C, they stop feeding, and high temperatures can also hinder growth. Although they can live in dirty water, maintaining clean conditions with adequate oxygen is necessary for high-density breeding. During hot months, regular water changes are important. During spawning, keep the environment calm to avoid stress. Avoid walking near the platform during incubation to protect the eggs. The platform should remain moist and covered with aquatic plants. If overflow occurs during rain, ensure the water doesn’t pass over the platform, keeping a gap of about 3 cm. Newly hatched mink rely on yolk sacs for the first few days and begin feeding on snails and clams after three days. They grow rapidly, reaching an average of 15 mm within two weeks. Dividing the pool in early July helps manage breeding more efficiently. The density should be kept at 70-100 individuals per square meter. As temperatures drop below 10°C, mink stop feeding and either burrow into the soil or hide under leaves. Only large, healthy individuals should be selected for winter storage. About 375-450 kg per hectare is recommended, and the pond surface should be covered with straw or leaves to retain warmth and moisture. Before introducing mink, the pool should be cleaned thoroughly with lime to eliminate unwanted species like shrimp, crabs, and other fish. Water filtration systems can help maintain cleanliness. Additionally, protect against predators such as mice, frogs, and fleas. Disease prevention is vital. Before stocking, disinfect the water with trichloroisocyanuric acid (0.2–0.25 g/m³) or sodium dichloroisocyanurate. In summer, regularly treat the water with furazolidone (0.2–0.4 g/m³) and iodophor (50 g/m³) to prevent bacterial infections. These steps ensure a healthy and productive breeding environment.
