Regularly cleaning the garden, timely cultivation, and removing debris help eliminate snail habitats and egg-laying sites, reducing their population sources. In fall and winter, deep plowing can bring eggs and overwintering adults to the surface, where they are exposed to sunlight or predated by natural enemies. In areas with severe snail problems, leaving a small patch of weeds during winter and spring, followed by plowing in autumn, can attract snails and make them easier to remove.
Second, the use of lime is an effective method. Apply a thin layer of quicklime around plants, but avoid direct contact with crop leaves to prevent interference with photosynthesis. Snails that come into contact with lime at night while feeding will lose moisture and die. You can also use 6% metaldehyde granules or spray them across the field. For better results, apply 6% metaldehyde at the base of the plants. If snail infestations are severe, repeat the treatment every 10 to 15 days to effectively manage the damage.
Lastly, manual collection is a practical and environmentally friendly approach. Catch snails early in the morning or after rain, when they are more active and vulnerable. This method works best when done consistently and combined with other control measures. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for any chemical products used to ensure safety and effectiveness.
By combining these methods—agricultural practices, lime application, chemical treatments, and manual removal—you can significantly reduce snail populations and protect your crops from damage. It’s important to monitor the situation regularly and adjust your approach as needed for long-term success.
