One of the early signs of bacterial spot disease is the appearance of water-soaked lesions on leaves, which gradually turn light brown. These lesions are often polygonal and confined by leaf veins, appearing grayish-brown or yellow-brown. Under high humidity, a milky, watery bacterial exudate may appear on the leaves. After drying, white marks remain, and the affected tissue becomes brittle and easily torn. Similar symptoms can also be observed on stems, petioles, and fruits, where water-soaked spots form, producing white mucus when wet and leaving white residues after drying. To prevent this disease, seeds can be treated with 70°C dry heat for 72 hours (with moisture content below 10%) or soaked in warm water at 50–52°C for 20 minutes, followed by a 3-hour soak before sowing. During the early stages of infection, spraying 1000 times diluted agricultural streptomycin powder, 500 times diluted 30% DT sterilizer, or 1000 times diluted 5% chlorothalonil dust has proven effective. Fusarium wilt is particularly persistent, surviving in the soil for up to 5–6 years. It thrives in warm, humid conditions, with disease onset most rapid when soil temperatures range between 25–30°C and air temperatures between 24–27°C. Excessive nitrogen fertilizer and acidic soils (pH 4.6–6) can worsen the condition. Fields with high nematode populations or those prone to flooding tend to suffer more severe infections. In addition to using resistant varieties, crop rotation with non-cucurbit vegetables such as onions or legumes for over three years can help reduce pathogen buildup. Early-stage treatment includes applying 50% carbendazim wettable powder at 500 times dilution or 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder at 800 times. Root irrigation with 70% dexamethasone WP at 1000 times or 50% mancozeb dry wettable powder at 800 times, 250 ml per plant, every seven days for three consecutive applications, can also be effective. Grafting is currently one of the best methods, using blackcurrant pumpkin as a rootstock and cucumber as a scion, resulting in over 95% disease control. Downy mildew typically begins with water-soaked, irregular yellow spots on the underside of leaves. As the disease progresses, the lesions expand and become restricted by leaf veins, forming polygonal yellow patches. In severe cases, small lesions merge into larger ones. High humidity leads to the development of a gray to black mold layer on the underside of infected leaves. The disease spreads from the lower to upper parts of the plant, eventually leading to complete leaf death if left unchecked. For prevention, it's essential to apply sufficient phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, promote strong seedlings, and manage irrigation carefully to avoid excessive moisture. Ensuring good ventilation to reduce humidity is also crucial. For chemical control, options include 25% Rhizoctonia WP at 800–1000 times, 90% Epimedium WP at 500–600 times, 75% chlorothalonil WP at 500–600 times, 72% Kexin wettable powder at 600–800 times, or 72% Puliqin liquid at 600–1000 times. Alternatively, 20–30 grams of chlorothalonil smoke agent per acre can be used. Applications should be made every 7–10 days for 3–5 consecutive treatments. Root-knot nematodes cause visible galls on cucumber roots, especially in severe cases. Affected plants show stunted growth, poor fruiting, and wilting during hot midday periods. Pulling up the plants reveals swollen, necrotic nodules on lateral or fibrous roots, sometimes appearing beaded. Upon cutting open the galls, small, milky-white nematodes can be seen inside. Prevention and control methods include solarizing the soil, practicing fallow irrigation, and increasing organic fertilizer application. During the growing season, 50% phoxim EC at 1500 times or 30% JiaSheng microcapsule emulsion at 500 times can be applied, with 0.25–0.5 kg of solution per plant, usually once per season.
