First, choose a suitable variety. For autumn delayed green cauliflower, you can select early-maturing varieties such as Green Ball, Green King, or Green Ridge. Alternatively, late-maturing types like Green Ball and Green King are also available. The choice depends on your local climate and market demand.
Second, determine the right sowing time. Autumn green vegetable cultivation typically begins in late July to late August. The exact timing should be adjusted based on when you plan to sell the broccoli, ensuring it reaches the market at the optimal stage of maturity.
Third, cultivate strong seedlings. Start by preparing the nursery bed after harvesting previous crops. Clear the greenhouse of weeds and keep the original plastic film. Seven days before sowing, mix 5000 tons of high-quality organic fertilizer with 50 kg of superphosphate and 20 kg of potassium sulfate. After fertilizing, till the soil to a depth of 30 cm and level it. Create seedbeds that are 6–7 meters long and 1.3–1.6 meters wide, oriented north-south. Mix the soil with 100 grams of carbendazim, 100 grams of trichlorfon, and 100 kg of well-sieved organic fertilizer, then water the beds thoroughly before sowing.
Fourth, sow the seeds. Use 50–75 grams of seeds per acre. After watering the bottom, cover the seeds with 0.5 cm of fine soil. Then place a layer of straw over the seedbed and cover it with plastic. On sunny days, cover the seedbed at around 10 am and remove it at 5 pm. On cloudy days, no covering is needed.
Fifth, manage the seedlings. When the seedlings have two leaves and one heart, remove weak or diseased plants and thin them out. Water when the true leaves appear, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water every 3–4 days. Once the seedlings have 4–5 true leaves, give them a couple of heavy waterings before transplanting. Be careful not to overwater, as this can cause root rot. Every 10 days, spray a 75% chlorothalonil solution to prevent disease outbreaks.
Sixth, transplant the seedlings. Autumn broccoli seedlings are usually ready for transplanting after 30–35 days, when they have 6–7 leaves. Transplanting is best done in the evening to avoid heat stress. Spacing varies: early varieties need 33–40 cm between plants and 43–50 cm between rows, while mid- to late-season varieties require 50–60 cm between plants and 60–70 cm between rows.
Seventh, provide proper care. From planting until the formation of the flower head, maintain balanced watering and fertilization. Regularly loosen the soil to prevent waterlogging and drought. Overwatering can lead to "water margin," where the plant grows too tall and fails to form a tight curd. Conversely, if the soil becomes too dry, the plants may become stunted and the flower head may be small and thin.
Eighth, control pests. For downy mildew, apply 64% mancozeb WP diluted to 500 times, repeating every 7 days for 2–3 applications. For pests like locusts, cabbage caterpillars, and diamondback moths, use smoke agents, dichlorvos, or Bt emulsions for effective control.
Ninth, harvest on time. Harvest the broccoli when the buds are fully developed but not yet loose. When cutting, leave 3–4 young leaves below the flower head to protect it from damage and contamination during handling.
