Studies show that smoking increases the risk of cancer in the head and neck A new study published in the United States shows that smoking increases the risk of head and neck cancers such as laryngeal, nasal, oral and pharyngeal cancer. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute reported in a new issue of the American journal Cancer that they analyzed the data from about 476,000 people between 1995 and 2000. Researchers say the risk of head and neck cancer in both men and women is increased by smoking, but women are more affected. Their study found that 75% of all cancer cases in women are related to smoking, compared with 45% in men. The researchers pointed out that if all factors are taken into account, the incidence of head and neck cancer in men is higher than that in women; if only smoking is considered, women are at higher risk of developing this type of cancer than men. Researchers believe that one of the effective ways to reduce the risk of cancer in the head and neck is to quit smoking.
