The apple aphid, a member of the order Hemiptera, is a significant pest that typically infests cracks, wounds, new shoots, and the rhizosphere of apple trees. These pests feed on the sap of the tree, depleting its nutrients and weakening its overall health. As a result, infested fruit trees experience reduced vigor and shorter lifespans. Due to this, apple aphids are classified as a quarantine pest in many countries around the world.
In China, the control of *Myzus persicae* (commonly known as the apple aphid) was historically managed using pesticides such as "666" and "DDT." However, after these chemicals were banned by the government in 1983, there was a noticeable gap in effective pest control measures. This led to an increase in aphid populations and challenges in managing them. In response, the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Commission initiated a research project focused on integrated pest management techniques for apple aphids. Collaborating with the Shandong Pesticide Research Institute and Gaomi Pesticide Chemical General Factory, they developed a new insecticide called "Annihilation 40% Emulsifiable Concentrate," which effectively filled a domestic market gap.
Using Annihilation for apple aphid control can be highly effective if applied at the right time. A single treatment, when timed correctly, can provide full-season protection. Field tests have shown that the optimal time for the first application is in May, while the second round should be conducted between late October and early November, just before harvest.
There are two common methods of applying Annihilation: foliar spraying and trunk ring treatment. The foliar spray method involves diluting the 40% emulsifiable concentrate with water at a ratio of 1000 to 1500 times. In May, the focus should be on the trunk and main branches. During the fall months, from October to November, the spray should be evenly distributed over the entire tree canopy.
The trunk ring method is suitable only during the active growth period of the tree, typically done in May. To apply it, mix 1 part of the 40% Annihilation concentrate with 4 parts of water to create a 5-fold solution. Then, select an appropriate section of the tree trunk and apply the solution in a 4–5 cm wide ring. For young trees (1–7 years old), the solution can be directly painted onto the bark. For older trees, gently scrape the rough bark surface without damaging the inner layer, then evenly spread the liquid. Cover the treated area with newspaper and wrap it with plastic film to ensure effective absorption.
