Some Experiences in High Yield Cultivation of Bananas

In the winter of 1999, before the winter solstice, banana farming in Dongguan City faced a severe crisis due to low-temperature frost damage. Most banana crops were destroyed, causing significant losses for local farmers. However, one farmer, He Jinbo from Shatian Town, managed to achieve an impressive harvest despite the harsh conditions. His 37-acre banana plantation yielded 3,088 kg per mu, with a total value of 185,000 yuan and a net profit of 148,000 yuan. His success was based on several key practices. First, He focused on planting high-quality banana varieties. Over the past five years, he has consistently cultivated Brazil bananas, known for their thick pseudostems, long and erect leaves, and large, well-shaped fruit clusters. These bananas are not only high-yielding but also stable in production, with each bunch weighing between 20 to 40 kg and individual fingers measuring 23 to 26 cm in length. Second, he carefully timed his planting to align with market demand. After analyzing the banana market over the years, he found that the period around Chinese New Year offered the highest prices. To capitalize on this, he adjusted his planting schedule, choosing to plant summer bananas in late June and harvesting them in September of the following year. This strategy allowed him to sell bananas at an average price of 125 yuan per 50 kg, reaching up to 90 yuan during peak seasons. Third, He emphasized proper fertilization during the flower bud differentiation stage, which is critical for determining fruit size and quality. He applied medium-term fertilizer when the plants had 32 to 36 leaves, ensuring sufficient nutrients for optimal flower development. He used a combination of urea, superphosphate, and bio-potash, applying about 7.5 kg of urea, 10 kg of superphosphate, and 5 kg of bio-potash per mu every 7 to 12 days. Fourth, he improved his planting method by implementing a rotation system. He planted summer bananas in rows spaced 3.2 meters apart with 2 meters between plants, resulting in 103 plants per mu. The next year, he alternated the planting side, allowing the previous year’s banana trees to provide shade for new seedlings. This practice enhanced soil structure, enriched nutrients, and improved the growing environment for young plants, leading to better growth and survival rates. Lastly, He used protective agents during the flowering and fruiting stages. When the seventh or eighth banana hands began to emerge, he sprayed products like Banana Hypertrophy Fruit Treasure and Fullness Agent. After seven days, he applied pesticides such as Dimethoate, Yunda 120, and Big Brother to protect the fruit from pests and diseases, ultimately improving fruit quality and marketability. Through these innovative and well-planned strategies, He Jinbo turned a challenging season into a successful harvest, offering valuable lessons for other banana farmers in the region.
