A groundbreaking development in cancer treatment has emerged from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Researchers have created a "nano machine" capable of storing and delivering anti-cancer drugs directly to cancer cells using light as a trigger. This innovation marks a significant step forward in the field of nanotechnology and could revolutionize how we treat various types of cancer.
The nano-device, called a "nano-propeller," is made from mesoporous silicon nanoparticles. These particles are coated with a chemical compound known as azobenzene, which is sensitive to light. The pores within the nanoparticles can be filled with anti-cancer drugs, which are then released when exposed to specific wavelengths of light. This allows for precise control over drug delivery, ensuring that the medication is released exactly where it's needed.
In laboratory tests, the nano-machine was introduced into human cancer cells, including those from colon and pancreatic cancers. When illuminated with light, the device activated and released the drugs, effectively attacking the cancerous cells. The researchers observed that the amount of drug released could be adjusted by varying the intensity, wavelength, and duration of the light exposure.
Professor Jeffrey Zink, one of the lead researchers, emphasized the potential of this technology. He described the nano-machine as a promising tool for targeted drug delivery, suggesting it could serve as a "next-generation platform" for treating various cancers, such as those affecting the colon and stomach.
