How to manage watermelon seedlings

Watermelon seedlings often face challenges during the early growth stage, especially when exposed to adverse weather conditions like cold temperatures and rain, or pests and diseases. These issues can lead to a condition known as "frost-damaged seedlings," where the leaves appear yellow, new vines fail to develop, and the plants show no signs of growth. It is crucial to take immediate action to rescue these seedlings and restore their health.

First, ensure proper soil aeration by lightly tilling the soil around the seedlings—about 10 cm deep—on sunny days. This helps improve the root environment, raise soil temperature, and encourage the development of new roots. Second, if waterlogging is an issue, dig drainage ditches to lower the water table and prevent root rot. Make sure to keep the ditches clear of debris to allow proper water flow.

Third, apply a foliar spray containing Jinbo Growth Enhancer. This product helps speed up plant recovery, reduces symptoms like slow growth, yellowing leaves, weak flowering, and fruit size reduction, and addresses nutrient deficiencies such as calcium, zinc, and boron. It can be applied multiple times throughout the growing season, with results showing up to a 20% increase in growth rate.

Fourth, provide essential nutrients to support the seedlings’ recovery. Apply a thin layer of wood ash around the roots to help insulate and warm the soil. After loosening the soil, you can also apply a 0.3–0.5% urea solution and a 0.2–0.3% boron fertilizer to the roots. Additionally, spraying a 0.4% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution on the foliage can further boost plant health.

Lastly, protect the seedlings from pests and diseases by using a 50% carbendazim wettable powder diluted at 800 times. This fungicide helps prevent and control common diseases, ensuring the seedlings have a better chance of thriving.

By following these steps, growers can effectively manage frost-damaged watermelon seedlings and improve their chances of successful growth and high yield.
