Release date: 2016-09-13

According to Japanese media reports, the special review committee within Osaka University revealed on September 9, 2016 that they have determined that the implementation plan for the world's first other iPS cell transplant surgery is “appropriate” and that the operation will be implemented. In this operation, the expert uses other iPS cells (induced pluripotent stem cells) to make retinal cells, and transplants the prepared cells to a patient with severe eye disease.

A joint team of four organizations, including Kyoto University, Osaka University, the Institute of Physical Chemistry, and the Kobe City Medical Center, announced plans in June this year and formally submitted applications. The team members indicated that they will further amend the proposal and submit the proposal and the special review committee's submission to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (Japan's main department responsible for health and social security). After completing the accreditation procedures of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, it is planned to carry out transplant surgery in the first half of 2017.
