Winter irrigation in orchards is good for water storage and phlegm-removing, to stabilize ground temperature, prevent frost damage to fruit trees, and reduce overwintering pests. The technical points are as follows:
Generally in the temperature of about 3 °C, 5 cm soil temperature of 5 °C or so, when the top soil freezes and disappears when the winter irrigation is good. If the winter irrigation is too early, the temperature is still high, evaporation is large, not conducive to water conservation; if it is too late, the temperature has dropped, the soil is frozen, the water is not easy to infiltrate, frozen water, ice roots, fruit trees are susceptible to frost damage. The amount of water poured into the winter should be fully infiltrated by the water on the day of irrigation and soaked in the root distribution layer (40-60 cm). After the irrigation, the soil moisture is maintained at 60% to 85% of the maximum water capacity in the field.
After winter irrigation, wheat straw, rice hulls, wheat bran, weeds and other materials are used to cover the whole garden ground to protect glutinous rice and prevent freezing. When covering, straw should be cut into small pieces about 10 cm long. If there is no covering condition, shallow soil shall be loosened immediately after irrigation to prevent and reduce water evaporation.
