Habitat and Distribution:
It is mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions, with a few species occurring in temperate zones. It thrives in mixed forests, shrubs, along roadsides, in gullies, and on hillside grasslands.
This plant is widely distributed throughout the region, often growing in areas with long-painted East swords and high-mountainous terrain.
Medicinal Parts:
The dried roots are known as "Barnyardgrass," while the dried stems are called "Shanlong."
Taste:
Bitter and cold in nature. It has the function of cooling the blood and stopping bleeding (when charred), as well as resolving blood stasis and promoting circulation.
Indications:
It is used for various types of bleeding, irregular menstruation, bruises, and rheumatism.
Application Examples:
1. For various types of bleeding: Take 6–9 grams of herbal charcoal with water.
2. For amenorrhea or irregular menstruation: Use 30–45 grams of Valerian root with Jianshui feet, taken three times daily.
3. For rheumatism and bruises: Use 120 grams of Valerian root, steeped in 750 ml of water for seven days. Take 30 ml twice daily.
Recently, Zhu Hua, a young botanist at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, made a significant discovery by identifying over 50 new species within the Rubiaceae family.
According to reports, the Rubiaceae family belongs to the dicotyledon class and includes approximately 450 to 500 genera and 6,000 to 7,000 species. In China, there are about 70 genera and 450 species. This family contains many economically important plants, such as medicinal herbs like cinchona and barnyardgrass, beverages like coffee, and ornamental plants such as June snow and wolfberry. These discoveries by Zhu Hua have greatly enhanced scientific understanding of the Rubiaceae family and laid the foundation for future research and utilization.
Most of the more than 50 new species discovered by Zhu Hua were published in SCI-indexed journals. For instance, a new species of the genus Sphagnum in Thailand was published in the Nordic Journal of Botany, while new species found in Vietnam and Malaysia were published in Blumea, an international journal focused on plant taxonomy and biogeography. Additionally, he contributed a monograph titled "The Taxonomic Study of the Chinese Yucagrass Rumex Plants" to the core international journal "Systematics and Plant Geography." His work has earned him recognition as an expert in the classification of this genus, and he was funded by the Netherlands National Science Foundation to participate in an international research project on the taxonomy of Phyllostachys plants in Malaysia.
