Scientific name: Schefflera octophylla
English name: Ivy Tree
Common Name: Duckfoot
Botanical Classification: Five Plus Branch
Morphological Features:
This is an evergreen shrub or small tree, typically found in tropical and subtropical regions. Young branchlets are densely covered with star-shaped hairs. The leaves are palmate compound, arranged alternately on the stem, with 6 to 11 leaflets that are elliptic or obovate-elliptic in shape and have smooth margins. The inflorescences are terminal, with a star-like pubescence, and produce white, fragrant flowers. The fruit is spherical, and the fruiting period usually occurs between December and January.
Native Habitat: Schefflera octophylla is native to China, where it thrives in warm, humid environments.
Growth Requirements:
The ideal growing temperature for this plant is between 16°C and 27°C. During spring to autumn (March to September), it prefers temperatures ranging from 21°C to 27°C, while in winter (September to March), it can tolerate temperatures as low as 16°C to 21°C. It can still grow well even in temperatures above 30°C. However, during winter, the temperature should not drop below 5°C. If the temperature falls below 0°C, the plant may suffer frost damage, leading to leaf loss. Despite this, if the stems remain healthy, new leaves will regrow in the following spring.
This species is sensitive to drought. It thrives best in high humidity and consistently moist soil, which promotes strong growth of both stems and leaves. However, overwatering can lead to waterlogging and root rot. In cases of prolonged dryness, such as when potted plants lack sufficient moisture, the plant may lose its leaves. That said, Schefflera has some tolerance for short periods of drought and dry air.
Light requirements are relatively flexible. It can grow well in full sun, partial shade, or indirect light. The intensity of light affects the color of the leaves—under bright light, the leaves tend to be lighter in color, while in shaded conditions, they appear darker green. For variegated varieties, bright light enhances the vibrancy of their patterns.
Soil Preferences: It grows best in fertile, loose, and well-draining sandy loam. When grown in pots, a mix of peat soil, humus soil, and coarse sand is recommended for optimal growth.
Ornamental Value:
Schefflera octophylla is known for its attractive, evergreen foliage, making it a popular choice for indoor potted plants and garden landscaping. Its vibrant leaves add visual interest to both homes and outdoor spaces, and it is often used in decorative arrangements.
