Alias: Silver Veins, Silver Veins Bed, Jasmine Beds
Morphological Characteristics
The Silver Veins plant is an evergreen shrub with multiple branches. Its leaves are ovate to ovate-elliptic in shape, measuring 20 to 30 cm in length. The tips of the leaves are pointed, and the edges have slightly serrated margins. The foliage is dark green with a glossy sheen, and the veins are strikingly white or silver in color. The inflorescence consists of a single spike or three spikes, with closely packed flowers arranged symmetrically into four columns along the axis. The sepals are orange-yellow and very prominent, while the corolla is yellow and two-lipped. This plant blooms during the summer and autumn months. The term "yellow veins" refers to the golden-colored veins found on the leaves.
Origin and Growing Conditions
This plant is native to Brazil. It thrives in bright, warm, and humid environments and is not tolerant of cold temperatures. It requires well-draining, fertile soil for optimal growth.
Propagation and Cultivation
Propagation can be done through cuttings in spring and autumn. Choose healthy shoots for cuttings, ensuring each cutting has 3 to 4 buds. Rooting typically takes about one month. During the summer, it should be placed under a shaded area to avoid direct sunlight. In late fall, it should be moved indoors to a greenhouse where there is sufficient light. If the light is inadequate, the plants may become leggy, and the leaves may darken, causing the white veins to turn green. The ideal growing temperature is between 20°C and 30°C, and winter temperatures should not drop below 10°C. During the growing season, apply a liquid fertilizer containing nitrogen and phosphorus every 10 to 15 days. Overuse of only nitrogen-based fertilizer can cause the leaf veins to lose their vibrant color. Pruning and pinching back the tips help control the plant’s height and promote a full, compact growth habit. Repotting every 1 to 2 years is recommended to maintain healthy root development.
Garden Use
The Silver Veins plant is visually stunning, with its shiny, dark green leaves and striking white or silver veins that stand out beautifully. During the flowering season, the orange and yellow blossoms add a vibrant touch to any space. It is an excellent indoor plant, admired for both its attractive foliage and showy flowers.
