Orange red children's ball (Figure)

The orange-red offspring ball, also known as the "Baoshan" cactus, is a small, spherical plant belonging to the Cactus genus. Each individual ball has a diameter of approximately 4 cm and features a green skin with fine spiral ribs, dense punctures, and white hair-like structures. The top of the ball is slightly indented, and flowers emerge from the lower part of the sphere. These flowers are typically orange-red or orange-yellow and bloom in spring and summer, often opening simultaneously to form a striking ring around the ball. This unique appearance makes it a visually appealing addition to any collection.

Orange-red offspring balls are relatively easy to care for, making them ideal for home cultivation. Native to Bolivia, they thrive in warm, dry, and sunny conditions. They are not cold-tolerant and prefer well-drained soil, avoiding excessive moisture. They can withstand drought and partial shade, but for optimal growth, they require temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. Place them on a south-facing windowsill or balcony where they can receive ample sunlight. Too much shade can cause the balls to become elongated and reduce flowering.

Ensure good air circulation and keep the soil moist but not soggy. When watering, avoid pouring water directly onto the top of the ball, as this can lead to water accumulation in the central "pit," potentially causing rot. Fertilize monthly with a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer to support healthy growth and blooming.

In winter, move the plant indoors to a bright location and maintain a temperature between 8°C and 10°C. Reduce watering to encourage dormancy, which will help promote more flowers in the following season. Every year, repot the plant and trim about half of its roots. Allow the cuttings to dry for 2–3 days before planting them in fresh soil. A suitable mix includes garden soil, leaf mold, and coarse sand or vermiculite in a 1:1:2 ratio, along with a small amount of bone meal or crushed eggshells for added minerals.

Propagation can be done during the growing season by taking cuttings after allowing the wounds to dry. While this method has a high survival rate, it may result in slower growth and delayed flowering. For faster growth and earlier blooming, grafting onto triangular spines, grass balls, or other compatible cacti is an effective technique that yields excellent results.
