Rice field water should not be early

In order to take advantage of the season, many farmers have started planting early and often dry out the fields before the rice is fully mature. Some even stop watering the rice fields once they are filled with grains. As you might know, these practices can seriously affect the later growth of the rice and often lead to lower yields. During the critical reproductive stages—such as booting, heading, and flowering—rice plants require a lot of water and are highly sensitive to both water and nutrients. If the field doesn't receive enough water during this time, it can cause delayed heading, poor pollination, early plant maturity, more empty grains, and lighter kernels, all of which ultimately reduce the overall yield. Proper water management is essential during these stages. The recommended approach is to keep the field deep-watered during booting, maintain an inch of water during heading and flowering, use shallow water during grain filling, and keep the soil moist during maturation. This helps improve the percentage of filled grains and increases the 1000-grain weight. Therefore, it's not advisable to cut off water too early. Typically, it's best to stop irrigation 3 to 7 days before harvest to ensure the rice reaches its full potential.
