Several Points to Be Paid Attention to in Summer Management of Pomegranate

Fertilization for an undeveloped pomegranate tree should be applied after two-thirds of the flowers have bloomed and one month prior to fruit maturity. For established trees, in addition to these two fertilization stages, it's important to provide additional nutrients during the early growth phase. In the initial stage, a higher concentration of phosphorus fertilizer is recommended, while potassium becomes more essential during the later growth period. The amount of fertilizer required depends on the expected yield; trees with fewer fruits need less fertilizer, whereas those with a heavier crop load require more. Pruning is crucial for maintaining healthy pomegranate trees. These trees thrive when their branches are well-distributed within the canopy, allowing for good air circulation and light penetration. Pruning should be done during winter and spring, and in summer, topping and shortening of new shoots are necessary. Removing tender tips helps control excessive growth and reduces competition for nutrients. This practice also promotes a balanced distribution of branches and leaves, enhancing overall tree health and fruit quality. Regarding disease and pest control, common issues include dry rot and early leaf drop. If symptoms appear during summer or autumn, Bordeaux mixture can be applied before flowering. During the flowering stage, thiophanate-methyl solution is effective. After flowering, during the fruit expansion phase, regular applications of antiviral or antibacterial sprays—once every 7–10 days—are recommended. It’s important to stop using any chemicals at least one month before harvest. Additionally, using fruit bags during the young fruit stage has proven beneficial in reducing the occurrence of dry rot.
