Tiantang shrimp, crabs, turtles, mixed breeds benefit

In a significant breakthrough for sustainable aquaculture, the innovative "Tiantang shrimp, crab, and turtle polyculture" model has brought remarkable economic benefits to Tiantan. This groundbreaking project was implemented at the agricultural comprehensive technical service station in Xinshi Town, Deqing County, and recently passed an official acceptance inspection conducted by the Huzhou Ministry of Agriculture Implementation Promotion Foundation. The initiative has proven highly effective, with an average output value of 4,659 yuan per mu in the 90-mu area used for mixed breeding. After subtracting costs, the profit per mu reached 2,547 yuan, nearly doubling the earnings from traditional single-species shrimp farming. Before the project's implementation, experts from the Provincial Agricultural Technology Promotion Foundation and officials from the Huzhou Executive Department visited Xinshi Town and observed that the potential for integrated aquaculture was strong. Following discussions with local authorities, they established a new agricultural technical service station and launched the "Tiantang Shrimp, Crabs, and Turtle Polyculture Technology Demonstration and Promotion" project. This initiative is part of the Provincial Agricultural Technology Promotion Foundation’s broader "Two Changes and Two Increases" program. The first change involved transforming shallow-water ponds into deeper ones. Previously, shrimps were raised in rice field ponds with water depths around 40 centimeters. By digging trenches and building embankments, the water level was increased to about 80 centimeters, significantly expanding the pond's capacity. The second change focused on shifting from single-species farming to polyculture. Two different models were introduced: one where shrimp, crabs, and carp are raised together using naturally available feed, and another where exotic crabs are farmed alongside carp. The first model covered 58 acres, while the second covered 32 acres. The "Two Increases" component involved introducing aquatic algae into the polyculture system, which now occupies 50% of the Tiantang area. Each mu receives an additional 250 kg of algae, contributing to improved productivity and ecological balance. This integrated approach not only boosts yield but also enhances sustainability, offering a promising model for future aquaculture development in the region.
