(1) Seed Selection and Disinfection: When selecting ginger seeds, it is crucial to avoid those from areas severely affected by ginger seedling diseases or fields previously infected with ginger borers. Choose healthy, plump, and firm rhizomes with bright skin and no visible signs of disease. For disinfection, soak the seeds in a 0.5% lime water solution for 5–6 hours. Alternatively, treat them with ash—mix dry, pure grass ash with a little water and blend it with the seeds before sowing. Another effective method is to soak the seeds in fungicides such as carbendazim, Dyson-zinc, or North-agri-green heng for 5–6 hours. These treatments help prevent fungal infections and improve germination success.
(2) Practice Crop Rotation: Since ginger borers can remain in the soil for over three years, it's advisable to rotate crops every three years or more. If possible, implement crop rotation with non-solanaceous plants, as pathogens affecting ginger can also infect solanaceous crops like tomatoes or peppers. This reduces the risk of disease carryover and maintains soil health.
(3) Soil Treatment: Soil treatment should only be done after the required crop rotation period has been met and when there has been no recent planting of solanaceous crops. Before plowing, spread 5–10 kg of lime per acre into the field and mix it thoroughly with the soil. Additionally, apply a soil bactericide like "North Nonglvheng" directly onto the soil surface to control microbial pathogens and enhance soil fertility.
(4) Prevent Re-infection: To minimize the risk of re-infection, consider planting sorghum in high-lying, well-drained areas. Implement regional crop rotation strategies to reduce pest and disease buildup. During the tillering stage, apply beneficial bacteria such as "Spirit" or "Dyson-zinc" as protective agents. Promptly remove and deeply bury any diseased plants away from the ginger field. Around the affected area, treat the soil with quicklime within a 1-meter radius to eliminate residual pathogens and prevent further spread.
