Harvesting and Processing:
Huang Jing, also known as Polygonatum sibiricum, is typically cultivated for 1 to 2 years when propagated through rhizome transplantation, or for 3 to 4 years when grown from seeds. The best time for harvesting is at the end of autumn or the beginning of spring. After digging up the roots, they are thoroughly washed to remove soil, fibrous roots, and any diseased parts. The cleaned roots are then steamed for 10 to 20 minutes to ensure even cooking and to enhance their medicinal properties. Following steaming, the roots are dried while being kneaded to prevent cracking and improve texture. This drying process usually takes 7 to 10 days until the material is completely dry and ready for use.
Medical Functions:
Huang Jing has a sweet and neutral taste, and it primarily affects the spleen, lung, and kidney meridians. It helps to nourish yin, generate body fluids, strengthen the spleen and lungs, and boost qi. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as internal cold, fever, phlegm in the lungs, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), tuberculosis, cough with phlegm, diabetes, hypertension, digestive issues, weak bones, and rheumatic pain. Additionally, Huang Jing is known for its immune-boosting properties, antibacterial effects, anti-aging benefits, skin-enhancing effects, and energy-strengthening capabilities.
