DNA nano machine 15 cents AIDS test or not a dream

A new study may revolutionize the expensive and cumbersome diagnostic process of infectious and autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and AIDS. An international research team designed and synthesized a nanoscale DNA machine that recognizes specific target antibodies. The study was published this month in the magazine Angewandte Chemie. This research helps to develop low-cost and rapid antibody detection and eliminate medical hysteresis.

Binding an antibody to a DNA nanomachine changes its structure to produce an optical signal. The sensor does not require chemical activation and can rapidly detect antibodies (reacting within five minutes), even in complex clinical samples such as serum.

One of the authors, Professor Francesco Ricci of the University of Rome, said that one of the advantages of this method is that it is very versatile. DNA nanomachines can be customized and can detect a large number of antibodies, so my technology platform is suitable for detecting different diseases.

Professor Vallée-Bélisle of the University of Montreal in Canada said that the platform is more advantageous than existing antibody detection methods. The method is fast, does not require chemical reagents, and may be suitable for different applications, such as on-site diagnostics and bioimaging.

Professor Kevin Plaxco of the University of California said that another feature of the technology platform is its low cost. The cost of a material required for a test is only 15 cents, which makes the method more competitive than other quantitative methods.

Simona Ranallo, the first author of the University of Rome, said that she was excited about the preliminary results of the study, but they looked forward to greater improvements. For example, the nanomachine signal can be read in the phone by adjusting the platform. If this is the case, then the method will benefit more people.
