Golden Maple Iris (Figure)

Acorus gramineus var. pusillus, commonly known as golden grass gladiolus, is a perennial herb belonging to the genus Acorus. It features underground stolons that help it spread and establish itself in suitable environments. The plant has linear, grass-like leaves with distinct golden lines along the edges and the central vein, giving it a striking appearance. Its height typically ranges from 30 to 50 cm, making it an ideal choice for garden beds or water gardens.

The inflorescence of this plant is cylindrical, bearing small white flowers that bloom between February and April. The fruits develop from March to July, adding to its ornamental value throughout the seasons. Native to the Yellow River valley in China, this species thrives in warm, humid conditions and prefers partial shade. It grows best in fertile, moist river mud or similar soil types, making it well-suited for wetland areas, borders, or even container gardening.

Golden grass gladiolus is not only visually appealing but also ecologically beneficial. When planted in ponds or water bodies, it helps absorb harmful substances and improves water quality. This makes it a great addition to both ornamental and functional landscapes. Propagation is primarily done through rhizomes (ramets), though it can also be grown from seeds under proper care. Whether used as ground cover, in water gardens, or in pots, this plant offers versatility and beauty to any setting.
