Scientific Name: Fatsia japonica
Common Names: Eight Hands, Hand Tree
Family: Araliaceae (not Acacia octagonal gold plate – this appears to be an error in the original text)
Fatsia japonica is native to Taiwan and Japan. It thrives in warm, humid climates but is also relatively hardy, making it suitable for cultivation in southern China, including areas along the Yangtze River, where it can tolerate winter conditions when planted outdoors. This plant prefers fertile, well-drained soil and can adapt to shady environments, such as under trees or in indoor spaces with indirect light. However, it should be protected from drought, extreme heat, and direct sunlight.
It is an evergreen shrub or small tree, typically growing 3–5 meters tall with upright branches. The leaves are leathery, glossy, and nearly round, with 5–9 deep palmate lobes and serrated edges. A yellowish short hair covers the underside of the leaves. The plant produces large, umbrella-like clusters of white flowers at the top of the stems, blooming from November to December.
Fatsia japonica can be propagated through seeds, cuttings, or division. Seeds germinate best at temperatures between 10–13°C. Cuttings taken in April or May usually root within 20–40 days, while spring is also a good time for propagating via runners (ramets). In regions north of the Yangtze River, it is often grown in pots and overwintered in greenhouses where temperatures remain above 5°C.
This attractive foliage plant is ideal for low-light indoor settings. It is commonly used to enhance the aesthetics of hotels, restaurants, meeting rooms, and home interiors. In southern China, it can be planted in courtyards, near entrances, along fences, by water features, under bridges, or on the shaded sides of buildings. It also works well as a ground cover along the edges of lawns or under tree canopies.
An interesting related species is Fatsia polycarpa, also known as Multi-chamber Octopus, which shares some similarities but has distinct characteristics.
