Brian Hanley is a Ph.D. in biology. At his request, the doctor injected a copy of the gene into his thigh. This is the second example of an irregular gene therapy recorded in the MIT Science Review, which is risky but advocated by a few bold individuals who are trying to develop anti-aging therapies.
The copy of the gene was designed and ordered by a company that researched and provided copies of the gene. Later, the doctor inserted two electrodes with pointed ends on his legs, and a powerful current passed through his body, making the muscle cells open and absorbing new DNA. Genes that are injected into Hanley's muscle cells cause his body to produce more potent hormones, which can increase his strength, endurance and longevity.

Hanley, 60, is the founder of Butterfly Sciences, a company based in Davis, and only Hanley himself. He had wanted to use DNA injection to enhance the physique of AIDS patients, but his idea was ignored by investors. After that, he decided to become the first person to eat crabs. "I want to prove this therapy, I want to try it myself, I want to make progress," Hanley said, and he decided to experiment on himself.
Most gene therapy involves high-tech, costly trials conducted by large teams at top medical centers to cure rare diseases such as hemophilia. However, Hanley said that gene therapy can also be used for liposuction or rhinoplasty, which greatly reduces the cost of surgery and may be easily accepted by everyone on a certain day in the future.
In order to prolong life, some anti-aging drug enthusiasts have been injecting growth hormone, oral fullerene or a large number of vitamins, and sometimes even ignored mainstream medical advice. Nowadays, irregular gene therapy may be the next research frontier. "It's crazy," Bruce Smith said. Bruce Smith is a professor at Auburn University who has conducted gene therapy research on dogs. "But this is human nature, it conflicts with technology."
Hanley used his knowledge and partial deposits to ensure the success of the trial. He arranged for professionals in the industry to obtain materials, make an appointment for blood tests, obtain a letter of approval from the local ethics committee, and hired an orthopaedic surgeon to assist him in the trial of two therapies. He conducted a small dose in 2015. Injection, and a large dose of injection was given in June last year.
