The Big Sibling Book

So, here’s something funny—my husband stumbled upon this book at this super quirky little bookstore just around the time we were expecting our first child, Brayden. Honestly, it wasn’t even something we went there specifically looking for, but as soon as he saw it, he knew it would be perfect for us to do together with our then four-year-old daughter. And oh boy, did it turn out to be a blast!

Our daughter was absolutely thrilled to dive into this whole thing. She couldn’t wait to answer all the questions in the book, whether they were about what she thought about having a new baby around or what she imagined life would be like once her little brother arrived. She also got really involved in helping glue in the photos we’d collected over the months leading up to the baby's arrival.

One of the coolest parts? She even drew some pretty adorable pictures for her soon-to-be brother. I still laugh thinking about how she’d sit there with her crayons and markers, completely absorbed in creating these little masterpieces that now live inside this keepsake book. It’s amazing how much personality shines through in those drawings.

As you flip through the book, it actually follows quite a neat timeline. The first section kind of walks you through the mindset of the big sibling before the baby comes along—things like hopes, fears, and expectations. Then, once the baby is here, it transitions into documenting their first year of life alongside interviews with the older sibling. There are sections where you can jot down milestones, compare the differences and similarities between the two kids, and just reflect on everything that’s happening.

One of my favorite parts was sneaking in the ultrasound photos. We didn’t have too many, but finding them felt like uncovering hidden treasures from back then. For example, I had to dig deep to locate Aliyah’s ultrasound photo because we didn’t realize how important it would become until later. But isn’t it wild that my twins ended up being such a big part of this story?

And naturally, our daughter had her own take on the whole thing. Like, who else would think to doodle rainbows coming out of the ultrasound images? It’s hilarious, but also so endearing because it shows exactly how her mind works—and how invested she was in this process.

Every time I pick up this book, I’m reminded of just how magical those early days were. There’s something so special about having captured not only the physical moments but also the emotions and thoughts of everyone involved. I could literally spend hours flipping through its pages—it’s like a little time capsule that never gets old.

Now, fast forward a few years, and guess what? Our daughter absolutely adores this book. She flips through it constantly, pointing out her drawings and reminiscing about all the fun we had making it. And honestly, I can already picture the day when she starts bossing around her younger brother, telling him to clean his room or help with chores. At that point, she’ll probably proudly declare, “I spent an entire YEAR of my life making YOU this book!”
