Professor Hua Nong is completely infertile with a new female parent rape

Following the discovery of the male sterile type “Porima” of rape, Fu Tingdong, a professor at the Huazhong Agricultural University, discovered another new type of male infertility. It is expected to replace “Porima” as a “new mother” of hybrid rapeseed. In the expert appraisal recently organized by the Provincial Science and Technology Department, this result was considered to have reached the international advanced level. In 1972, Fu Tingdong's mutant plant of "Porima" rape found in the field "is the first type of male sterile in rape that has practical value in the world" and was widely used in hybrid breeding of rapeseed at home and abroad. Experts may select the “father” of breeding as needed, but due to the single germplasm of female rapeseed, Fu Tingdong and others have been worried that this may reduce their “offspring”'s resilience to the environment. Although it is a type of male infertility, the "sterility" characteristic of "Porima" is not very thorough. In particular, trace pollens exist at low temperatures, affecting the purity of hybrids. Finding alternatives to "Porima" has become a world difficult problem for hybrid rape breeding. In 1999, in the experimental field of Huanong rapeseed, Fu Tingdong found a plant with no pollen in the mustard-type rape, and its stamen (the organ that produced pollen) had become a petal. After many years of observation and research, Fu Tingdong et al. determined that it is a new type of male infertility that is different from "Porima." Ordinary rapeseed self-pollination can be “transmitted”, but the cultivation of rapeseed hybrids that can significantly increase yields is complicated: first to find a stamen degenerate parent rape (male infertility); in order to maintain this sterile characteristic permanently Going down, we also need to find a kind of rape called “maintaining line” in common rapeseed; then we will find another kind of “father” canola (called restorer line), which can make “parent” rapeseed produce Flowers pollinate the normal canola. According to reports, Fu Tingdong and others are looking for "spouses" for this new type of female rapeseed - restoration line. If found, it can replace "Porima" and become the "new mother" of hybrid rapeseed.
