In a recent study published in the journal Nature Cell Biology, researchers at the University of Liverpool collaborated with colleagues around the world to explain how pancreatic cancer spreads to the liver. These findings may be the key to preventing the spread of the disease.

Metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a very malignant pancreatic cancer that affects approximately 330,000 people worldwide each year. Current therapies are not effective, so new treatment strategies are urgently needed.

The study, led by Dr. Michael Schmid of the Institute of Translational Medicine at the University of Liverpool, focuses on the role of host connective tissue cells or stromal cells in the pancreas as they spread to the liver. The process by which cancer cells spread to other parts of the body is called metastasis.

breakthrough

Although most of the research to date has focused on tumor cells, it has become clear in the past few years that the formation of non-malignant stromal cells and tumor microenvironments strongly influences the process of cancer development and metastasis.

The study found that matrix partners are critical for efficient metastatic growth of pancreatic cancer cells and identified a protein called "granulin" as a key regulator of pancreatic cancer metastasis.

Dr. Schmid said: "A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of pancreatic cancer metastasis is the key to improving patient outcomes and outcomes."

"Our work is a collaborative effort by several national and international research teams, and the evidence provides that pancreatic cancer metastasis is heavily dependent on the support of matrix-derived factors such as granulin and periostin, targeting these matrix factors. Points may improve the outcome of this devastating disease."

Exciting results

Sebastian Nielsen said: "We found that expression of inflammatory leukocytes or monocytes from granulin plays a key role in pancreatic cancer metastasis. These findings suggest that managing or disrupting the secretion of this protein may prevent cancer from pancreas to The key to liver spread."

The study was supported by a research team at the Institute of Translational Medicine at the University of Liverpool, including Dr. Ainhoa Mielgo, Dr. Takao Sakai, and clinicians Professor Fiona Campbell and Professor Dan Palmer.

Dr. Mielgo said: "These findings are very exciting because they reveal a new mechanism that is critical for pancreatic cancer metastasis and we now have specific targets."
