How Lavender Breeds

Lavender breeding methods include sowing, cutting, layering, and rooting. The main methods are cutting and sowing.

1. Seed Propagation: Lavender seeds are fine and suitable for transplanting seedlings. Sowing period is generally selected in spring, warm areas can be carried out every year from March to June or September to November, cold areas should be planted from April to June, and can also be planted in greenhouses in winter. The germination days are about 14 to 21 days. Germination temperature: 18 ~ 24 °C. Appropriate lighting is required after germination, and weak light is easy to grow. Seeds should be soaked for 12 hours before sowing for a longer period of dormancy, then soaked in 20-50 ppm GA3 for 2 hours before sowing. Before sowing, the land should be flattened and irrigated. After the water seepage, the seeds should be uniformly sown, then covered with a fine layer of fine soil 0.2 cm thick and covered with grass or plastic film to protect the crop. Keep 15 to 25 °C, require seedbed moist, about 10 days that is the emergence of seedlings. If you do not use gibberellin, it takes one month to germinate. It takes 1 to 3 months to germinate below 15°C. Pay attention to water spray at the seedling stage. When the seedlings are too dense, the seedlings can be appropriately transplanted. When the seedling height is about 10 cm, they can be transplanted.

2. Cutting propagation: Cuttings are generally performed in spring and autumn. Summer tender cuttings are also available. The cutting medium can be mixed with 1/3 of the coarse sand and 1/3 of the peat moss. The well-developed and well-bred plantlets were selected, and the annual semi-lignified shoot apical buds with short pitches and thick and not heading were selected, and cuttings were cut at the top 8 to 10 cm. The cutting incision should be close to the stem section, and strive to smooth, do not make the phloem rupture. Remove the leaves from the bottom 2 knots, insert the water for 2 hours and then insert it into the soil. After 2 to 3 weeks, the roots will develop. An annual branch of 8 to 10 cm may also be selected, and the roots may be rooted in about 40 days under conditions of good drainage and moisturization at a bed temperature of 20 to 24°C. Do not use the budding cuttings that have appeared inflorescences, because the flowering branches have been aged and will have adverse effects on future growth. Film cuttings, soil preparation do. After irrigating the film, immediately insert it. 5 to 8 cm deep, spaced 20 to 25 cm. Pay attention to raising the temperature and promote the development of the root system; Trim the extension branches, remove flower spikes promptly, promote branching, and cultivate strong seedlings. Planting distance 60cm, row spacing 120cm. Water immediately after planting.

3. Breeding of the ramets: Spring and autumn can be carried out. 3-4 years old plants are used. In the spring 3-4 months, the old roots of the plants are used to separate the buds.
