“A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery even while on a detour.”

We’re smack dab in the middle of summer, and there’s no better place to hang out than the water. Sure, staying inside with the AC cranking is tempting, but even then, the pull of the water is hard to resist. Usually, I’d be out there splashing around in the pool with my kids, soaking up the sun like it’s the last drop we’ll ever see. Summer is when I live for the pool, and I’ve spent many hours floating in the ocean until my fingers resemble raisins.

Let me just lay it all out here—this isn’t something I typically hold back on sharing, but here goes. I can’t get in the water. It’s scorching hot, and guess what? I can’t swim. Who knew that a miscarriage would come with such a lengthy ban from being submerged in water? Not this mama. Overall, I’m doing okay, but this small detail, hitting me smack in the middle of summer, has my kids begging me to join them—and it’s a daily reminder of our loss.

Today, I floated around on a tube with my rear end in the air, feeling like a hot-air balloon hovering over the water. My kids were thrilled, though, and I was at least able to stay cool. We might be on a bit of a detour, but I’m trying to soak up the scenery along the way. Even if my floating around like the sad, injured turtle at the aquarium we call “Bubble Bootie” isn’t exactly scenic for everyone else in the water.

Needless to say, I’m itching for the change of seasons. Honestly, I almost played Christmas music the other day, but then I remembered that pumpkins come first. Fall is calling my name, and I can practically taste the pumpkin spice lattes already.

While the heat keeps rolling in, so does the swimming, the popsicle breaks, and the never-ending line of drying pool towels. My acrobat daughter keeps flipping and spinning, always on the move.

My little two-year-old is catching on quickly. I call him my little swimmer boy.

It’s time to get your happy on.

As the days stretch on, I find myself reflecting on how life throws us curveballs. Some days are harder than others, but I’m learning to embrace the journey, even if it doesn’t look exactly how I imagined. The little moments—like watching my kids splash and play—are what keep me going. And who knows? Maybe next summer will bring new adventures and memories we can cherish together.

For now, I’ll keep floating along, enjoying the ride, even if it’s not exactly the smoothest path. After all, happiness isn’t about perfection—it’s about finding joy in the unexpected detours.
