genius! Maker students use self-made 3D printing braces to correct orthopedic success!

Release date: 2016-03-17

Since 3D printing technology can quickly achieve almost any shape, its application in the dental field is rapidly increasing, because dental products are most in need of personalization. However, since the development of such things requires considerable professional knowledge and equipment (such as high-precision 3D printers), so far, only companies of a certain size have the strength to make them. However, this situation may change soon, because recently AMD Dudley, a student at New Jersey Institute of Technology, has successfully created a usable bra with 3D printing!

On his blog, Dudley explained that he wanted to get a braces because he had several teeth that were curved and not beautiful enough. However, since he happens to be a maker and has the stubborn nature of “doing it all,” he did not go to the dentist, but decided to try to solve the problem himself. After thinking a little, he thought of a feasible solution, that is, 3D scans his teeth and then prints the braces in 3D.

It is understood that the whole process of making this 3D printing braces is as follows: First, Dudley uses alginate, a material called Permastone, and a 3D printed impression tray to create a dental mold of his own teeth; He used a NextEngine laser scanner to make a 3D scan of the dental model and used the resulting data to generate the STL file.

In the subsequent printing phase, in order to make the braces with sufficient precision, he chose the University's Dimension 1200es3D printer. The machine was developed by 3D printing giant Stratasys and has an accuracy of 0.1mm. Finally, he used a vacuum injection molding machine to create the final braces on the 3D printed model. In order to ensure that the braces do not hurt the teeth, Dudley also polished and other post-processing.

When the braces are not worn

After wearing the braces for 16 weeks

The end result is perfect. After wearing this braces developed through 3D printing for 16 weeks, Dudley's teeth became much more beautiful. You can see clearly from the comparison chart above.

Dudley is very happy with this piece of work and writes a very exciting feeling in the blog. Although he does not recommend this method of making his own braces, because it requires a lot of professional knowledge and equipment, but in Xiaobian's view, this is absolutely the perfect interpretation of the maker spirit and 3D printing. I believe that with the rapid spread of 3D printing, in the future, this trend of DIY will certainly become more popular.
