Cancer is cruel: Sometimes, emergency surgery to remove a tumor may just spread the cancer to other parts of the body. However, this diffusion process can be prevented by allowing patients to take compounds that have been used to treat heart failure.
Most people who die of cancer have spread or metastasized in their bodies. However, most of the current anticancer drugs only kill any cancer cells that come into contact with them and do not prevent cancer metastasis. It is hoped that the above compounds will become part of a new class of drugs designed to prevent the spread of tumors. "This is a very important step forward." Andrew Reynolds of the London Cancer Institute said that if cancer does not spread, they will be more easily cured.
A few years ago, a team led by Takashi Nojiri from Osaka University in Japan studied whether taking a drug called atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) before lung cancer surgery can reduce subsequent heart problems. ANP is a signal molecule found in the heart that has been used in Japan to treat heart failure and has been used for 20 years.
The study found that this approach worked and there was another benefit. Two years later, 91% of patients who received ANP did not develop secondary tumors, compared with 75% in the control group.
Experiments conducted in mice have shown that ANP molecules reduce the viscosity of the vessel wall, thereby preventing the flow of cancer cells from adhering to the vessel wall. Nojiri said that because ANP affects blood vessel walls rather than cancer cells, it can be used to treat all types of tumors. Currently, Nojiri is working with Japan's Yanyeyi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. to convert ANP into an anticancer drug.
