Potted tomatoes are very beautiful, so they are loved by many people, but growing potted tomatoes requires skill. Below Huinong Xiaobian introduced to you about the cultivation techniques of potted tomatoes, learn these five potted tomato planting techniques, and make your tomatoes healthy and strong!
First, use large containers
One of the most important things to ensure the success of a tomato is to use a container large enough, the bigger the better. For a tomato (unless it is a very small tomato variety), you need a container of at least 30 by 30 cm - 60 x 60 cm is better. A five-gallon bucket (a bucket available at a hardware store or a bucket that is freely available at a food factory restaurant) is the ideal size for growing tomatoes.
I am a tomato fanatic, mainly for food, not for appearance, so I put a plant in each container (unless it is a globe box or a huge container or a raised bed). Many people recommend planting herbs and other plants in pots. not me. Give tomatoes enough water to be hard enough not to be thrown in other plants that compete for moisture.
In addition, fill this large container with high quality potting soil to ensure good drainage.
Second, water, water and more water (but not too much!)
The key to tomato success is to give your tomato plants a certain amount of water, which may be the biggest challenge for tomato planting potted plants. Its goal is to keep the soil moist and not wet. Too much water and the roots of your plants will rot. Too little water, your plants will weaken, and your tomatoes will turn into burnt flowers.
Inconsistent water, too little, and then too much water, tomatoes will explode (or at least crack). The easiest way to handle this is to use a self-watering container. Otherwise, you will have to check your tomatoes every day.
If you are using a traditional container and you have too much rain, move your tomatoes to a sheltered area or cover them if they are small enough.
Another trick for tomatoes is to water in the morning (plants use water more efficiently in the morning).
Third, feed your tomatoes
Fertilizer is very important for tomatoes. Most people have the biggest and most common mistakes when planting tomatoes. Most potted soils (which are essential for almost any species in any container) are not nutritious. You will need to add a slow release fertilizer (organic fertilizer, compost) to the potted soil to ensure it is mixed into the entire container. Tomato-specific fertilizers can also be used, but you can use any multi-purpose slow-release fertilizer.
Then, according to my hard work, I water my tomatoes with diluted liquid fertilizer - usually liquid kelp powder or fish emulsion fertilizer - every week or every other week.
Fourth, let the sun shine
When choosing a place to grow tomatoes, you need to find exactly where you can get enough sunshine. Tomatoes will be able to meet at least 6 hours of light, which is minimal and better than 8 hours. If your plants don't get enough sunshine, move them where they want. In addition, checking the entire growing season, the sun moves in the sky, once a complete solar zone, and may now become a shadow.
Tomatoes also like calories, so don't put them outside to get warm, or prepare to move or protect them from the cold.
Five, deep planting
Most plants do not thrive if they are deeply planted, but tomatoes are not the same. You want to plant tomatoes in depth so that the roots will develop from the underground stems and your tomatoes will become stronger and healthier. When planting tomato seedlings, dig a hole and cover most of the plants with soil (although make sure the leaves stick out of the soil). If your container is not deep enough, you can't sink the tomato deeply (although it should be if you follow item 1!), you can also plant the plants flat.
You need to do a lot to prevent tomato planting failures, bad weather, illness or pest problems. More tomato planting knowledge is welcome to pay attention to the Hui Nong School!
